Your heart is the most important leadership tool you have.  It is not your experience, knowledge, or skills. Today I am reminded of what the scripture says about the heart and its importance; “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Let me lay down three truths from this verse of scripture:

First Verse:

Your heart is enormously valuable.

We don’t guard worthless things. I take my garbage to the street every Tuesday and Friday morning.  It is picked up in the late afternoon.  Now, it sits there just off the driveway for several hours, completely unprotected. Why? Because it is valueless, your heart is an entirely different story. It is the core of who you are.  It is your genuine self and the center of your being, the wellspring where all your dreams and desires live.  Your heart is that part of you that bonds and connects with God and other people.  Just like your physical body, if your spiritual heart dies, your dreams, your desires die. The scripture says, “Above all else.” That means make it your top priority.

Second Verse:

Your heart is the birthplace of everything you do and scripture says it’s the “wellspring of life.”

Our hearts burst into thoughts, words, and actions. In the state of Tennessee, they have thousands of beautiful natural springs.  If you dam up one of the springs, you stop the flow of life the spring brings. If you poison the water, the flow is now toxic, and it brings death instead of life.  Everything can be altered based on the condition of the spring.  Likewise, if your heart is unhealthy, it has an impact on everything else.  It can threaten your family, your friends, your career, and much more.  It is, therefore, urgent that you guard it.

Third Verse:

Your heart is under constant attack, that’s not a negative statement, its just the truth and you know that.

When scripture says to guard your heart, it implies that you are living in a combat zone for the heart.  Unfortunately, too many people are unaware of the reality of this combat zone.  The Deceiver (Satan) not only opposes God, but he opposes everything that is connected and aligned with Him including us. The Deceiver uses all kinds of weapons to attack your heart, such as circumstances that lead to disillusionment, dismay, discouragement, cynicism, despair, and the list can go on and on.  In these conditions, you might be persuaded into quitting your walk with God; surrendering the only power that can help you.

Guard Your Heart At All Cost!!  “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life”. (Proverbs 4:23)
